Before you buy a replacement motor for your Xmod, you've got to check this out http://www.mabuchi-motor.co.jp/english/cat_files/ff_180phsh.pdf. This motor is a direct replacement for the Xmod's stock motor. It has more than twice the torque but revs a little lower. Other people have put this in their Xmod with really low ratio gearing (the motor has more than enough torque to handle it) and the speed is insane. If you want to go really crazy, go to Radio Shack and buy a single AAA battery holder, mount it on top of your car's chassis (under the body!), put in a 5th battery and stand back. Supposedly the car can hit 25mph or more! You'll need AWD to make the car controllable and it's reported that even with AWD, the car will spin all 4 wheels if you 'punch' the throttle!

So, where can you get this motor???? In a Crest SpinBrush which you can get at WalMart! Yes, its a cheap battery powered toothbrush!!! I'm stopping at WalMart today to pick up a couple and I'll let you know how it works out.

Re: ULTIMATE MOTOR (for under $10!!!!!)

Let me ask a few questions, I didn't read the whole thread through, I'm so impatient

Besides the capacitors, what if instead of using the capacitors, you just put a wire there instead and shorted it out?

And, it has lower RPM's, but a ****load higher torque....What if you just used 6 1.2 volt NiMH batteries from RadioShack in series? I think that would be faster, that's the battery setup I'm using with the Stage 2 11-tooth blue motor.

I'm thinking of going to RadioShack, buying some capacitors, and testing them out on an Xmods motor.

STAGE 2HEAT siNk

hey anakin... im using a stage 2 blue and i'd been running it for a while. recently a friend of mine told me that the heat sink does not do anything but weigh my car down. so a couple of days ago i took out the heat sink. expecting it too run much faster i took it out for a test drive. IT DOESN"T PREFORM like it did before. if anything, it seems like my stock motor, if not worse. did anybody else have this problem?

Re: ULTIMATE MOTOR (for under $10!!!!!)

The Pinion your using is one down from mine. That'd be 10 teeth mine has the top speed of 11 teeth. will yours spin only with new batteries? How long do yours last? Mine only had like a 1/4 of their juice left and i haven't gotten any new ones yet. I have to save up lunch money... The thing is, the car could go as fast as the s2 drift motor with only 1/4 juice left but i'm still not sure if it will spin.

i switched the magnets like you did in my supra and im running 4 cells and its almost impossible to keep my wheels from spinning. Im using the autocross pinion which ever that is.

Re: ULTIMATE MOTOR (for under $10!!!!!)

It seems that everyones car can spin their tires and drift easily but i just recently got my xmod, a RSX. I've already done some modifications to it. I started with the body which isn't what im worried about. I then put a Stage 2 drift motor in the first day i got it and let me say... It didn't drift very well. So a few days later I come home with my new toothbrush. I installed the SB magnets (They're a b*tch to get out!) into my S2 housing and put on the S2 endcap which means it also keeps the S2 armature. And there I have my SB hybrid motor. The car was faster but i haven't tested it on full batteries yet. Later I decided I'd add a 5th cell to the mix, which seems to have made it a little bit faster than it was before. But It still won't spin the tires or drift well. I'm using a Top Speed pinion and differential at the time. It seems to be fast only because the tires will expand off of the wheels when i hold the car in the air, but i can't spin them off the wheels on the ground like some people have said. Is it just my batteries, alkaline non-rechargeable ones, or is there something wrong with my car? Please help this is frustrating me alot and I'm about to do something rash, like throw the car out my second story window. :x

Re: ULTIMATE MOTOR (for under $10!!!!!)

- 14ga wiring
- S2 motor with SB magnets
- 2 less winds with S2 armature
- Drag brass pinion with drift bevel gear (sometimes Drift brass pinion with stock bevel gear for great launching)
- 6-cell upgrade
- Head/Tail lights w/fog and 2nd break lights
- Stock ESC and FETs

...still running strong.

Re: ULTIMATE MOTOR (for under $10!!!!!)

i've got my 5th cell supplies on their way in the mail but this whole xmas thing is slowing them down a little... i just started reading about the spinbrush mod tonight and it sounds like a definite winner, but i'm clueless when it comes to soldering and pulling pinions. i'd hate to spend 15 bucks on a puller and 20 bucks on soldering stuff just for this one mod.. that turns it from a 5$ motor mod to a $40 motor mod... maybe some day...

Spinbrush cont....

I tested the new spinbrush mod, and I was very impressed!! I am using the 11 tooth pinion from the blue stage 2 motor.

The car has plenty of torque and top end speed. If you are planning on doing an upgrade, definitely try the spinbrush.

Spinbrush

I am new at the xmodification, but I just successfully installed a spinbrush motor in my supra. For the most part, the mod was easy. The biggest problem I had was getting the pinion gear off of the stage 2 motor. I bought a pinion puller ($13.99) at the local hobby shop and basically destroyed it trying to remove the gear.
Those little F*@%ers are on there good! Other than the pinion, all else went very smoothly. I am going to test it in a while if it doesn't start raining. I will post the outcome of the test run shortly.

Re: ULTIMATE MOTOR (for under $10!!!!!)

Heh! elephen, you've got it pegged. Story time:

My wife is an excellent driver and is competitive as hell. She used to have a blue 2000 Civic Si. (Sound familiar?) Earlier this year she had to sell it. (Long story.) I've been looking for a blue Civic Si ever since. When I saw RS was selling one I went to get it. Had to special order the thing, but I got it. I also got every accessory I could find for it (still no AWD... gotta special order it.)

I'm hoping she's stoked when she opens it on the 25th. 'Cause if she *IS* then *I* get a car. (And if not I'll take hers!)

Gotta tell ya, all this waiting is driving me nuts. Soooo many plans, and I can't even breathe a word of it in my own house. The one comforting thought is that when I finally do crack my toothbrush open and gut the motor, my wife's going to be right next to me at the bench cracking hers open, too. Only thing better than saying, "Look honey! I can solder!" is hearing her say, "Hey honey! Plug in the soldering iron! I'll be out in the shop in a sec."

Take your wife out to eat with your new xmod =) LOL.. She'll probably enjoy it as much as you do, just get her into and it then get her one, then you two could race 'em, nothing like good ole love & competition. Have fun

BTW I got my GWS Micro pinion puller for $5.00 at an online dist center, $2.50 shipping charge.

Re: ULTIMATE MOTOR (for under $10!!!!!)

Speed Demon: Don't you feel better that you 'built' this motor youself (and acquired some soldering skills in the process!) than if you plunked down some $$ for a ready made motor? Honestly, I find making my own mods (like this) to be the most satisfying thing about this hobby.

Plus, you can tell your wife "Look Hon, now I can solder! Lucky for us I've got an Xmod!!!" :D

BTW, anyone getting into this hobby really should pick up a soldering gun (much better than a soldering iron). You can pick up one for cheap, just click http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=CTLG&category%5Fname=CTLG%5F011%5F009%5F007%5F003&product%5Fid=64%2D2193.

Re: ULTIMATE MOTOR (for under $10!!!!!)

I bought the spinbrush pro for $7. Promised my wife I would not do any of the Radio Shack upgrades, (they are all under the christmas tree) so I thought this toothbrush thing was a good idea. I knew I had to get the pinion off, so I began with that. Took pliers and a crimper and started yanking. Completely destroyed my stock stage 1 motor. Ordered the pinion puller online.

Had to wait two weeks before it arrived in the mail. After 5 minutes to assemble the puller, the pinion was off of the stage 1 motor in under 1 minute. In the process of the previous yanking, I destroyed the stage 1 motor cap and capacitor. So, got a replacement capacitor, used the original motor cap of spinbrush (This required more soldering, make sure you sand the surfaces of the motor) and soldered the stage 1 connections.

For those of you who are a bit leary about this mod, I never soldered a day in my life until this mod. Peace of cake. My Supra is way faster than it ever was with the stage 1 motor. I'm still using the 8 tooth pinion, with only 4 cells. Can't wait to open my stage 2 motor upgrade to steal the 11 tooth pinion and gear set. I will be adding a 5th cell next, but this baby is allready very quick. Spins all over the place. Gotta wait til Christmas to add the AWD. Thanks Spinbrush Pro!

Real Cars

Yes, actually I have two real cars - a 2003 Acura MDX (my wife's) and a 2004 Acura TL (mine). As you can guess, I don't dare touch anything on those cars nor do I have a desire to 'pimp them out'. They're stock.

I also have a Traxxas E-Maxx with about $1,200 of mods put into it (awsome truck, check it out at www.traxxas.com). Lastly, I have this Xmod. RC cars & trucks is a hobby that I really enjoy. It's fun to try to squeaze every ounce of power and performance out of them. Plus, it's something I can do with my kids.

Regarding converting from AAA to AA, don't do it. You won't get any more power, just more runtime. Your car will be lots slower due to the extra battery weight. I recommend adding a 5th AAA cell.

Re: ULTIMATE MOTOR (for under $10!!!!!)

Never tried the ff-180-ph so I can't say. But for the price (under $5) the Spinbrush motor can't be beat.

Keep in mind, there are two basic ways to make an electric motor more 'powerful'. You can make a motor that has more RPM and less torque or more torque and less RPM (for a given voltage). The higher RPM motor will have to be geared down while the higher torque motor will have to be geared up. In the end, the power at the rear wheels will be the same. I prefer a higher torque motor because it will last longer due to less wear. Think of a two stroke gas motor versus a 4 stroke with the same horsepower. Same difference.
