The best motor of all time. Does not exist. No matter what those ebay auctions try and tell you. :)

People asking for what the best motor out there is, there isn't one. You are not asking the right questions.

If you are going to ask a question about a motor, it better consist of more than once sentence! "What is the best motor?", "What is the fastest motor?". Are not the questions you need to be asking.

The choice of motors depends on what type of driving you will be doing with your RC. Different conditions will require a different type of motor.

Before anyone asks a motor question, you need to read and become familiar with the following. Here is a well written 'All About Motors' created by CreativeSN. Thanks CreativeSN. :D

If you have asked a silly question, you probably have already been steered toward that topic.

A good motor is one that is designed with a balance of RPM's (Revolutions per minute) and torque. Think of RPM's as potential top speed, and torque as quickness, how fast can it reach that top speed.

This balance can be changed in three ways. One, by the winds on the armature (refer to CreativeSN topic link above). The more winds you add on to an armature, the less RPM's it can generate, but torque is increased. You will be able to reach the max RPM's of the motor faster, but the total RPM's is decreased. Two, by the strength of the magnets in the motor. The stronger the magnet, the more torque that motor will have, but overall RPM's will decrease some. Three, by the gearing after the motor. We can change this by using pinion gears with differing amount of teeth. The more teeth, the faster the wheels will spin in relation to the motor (Wheels will travel farther with each spin of the motor), but torque will decreased (will take you longer to reach max speed).

Case in point (This is not a scientific study, it's just to make a point). Car one can reach its max speed of 10mph in 10 feet. Car 2 can reach its max speed of 15 mph, in 25 feet. Car 1 is quicker, but car 2 has an overall higher top speed. Car 1 was made to have high torque, car 2 made to have higher top speed.

Now if the track has long straights and long sweeping corners such that the cars can stay at or close to max speed on the whole course, car 2 will win if the drivers are equal in skill. Who has the better motor?

Take those same 2 cars, on a serpentine track with lots of tight corners, and short straights such that the cars cannot reach there max speeds, and have to slow down and speed up alot, car 1 will win. He is quicker to get up to speed than car 2. Car 2 takes longer to reach top speed, and has to slow down for the corners before he even gets close to top speed. Who has the better motor?

So, to sum it up. A stock XMOD could beat a hopped up super fast 45 mph XMOD with certain track conditions. Fast means nothing if you cannot control the car on the track.

You can go to far in either direction. A motor with too many RPM's, will have little or no torque. Your motor may be able to reach 70,000 or more RPM's, but this does you no good at all without torque. If you do not have enough torque to move the car, the motor will never reach it's max RPM's and will be slower than a motor with lower RPM's but more torque. Think of a gutless car climbing a hill. It bogs down (slows down) because the motor does not have enough torque to keep the motor at its max RPM's.

Same goes the other way, you could make a motor with so much torque that your XMOD could climb a tree, but you would be sacrificing RPM's. Your XMOD may be able to climb a tree, but will take 3 hours to get to the top.

For those of you who are serious about racing, you may want to consider getting between 3 and 5 different motors, ranging from quick to fast, with a set of pinions to meet all kinds of track conditions.

Re: The Best Motor ever!

This is the topic that this section should always have had. Great post, Mongo.

Re: The Best Motor ever!

Great sticky mongo. But might i add that xxxxxxxxxis a good site for motors and the likes. 8)

MOD EDIT: No one asked for a XMOD motor site. This thread is not about where to get, but how to choose. DON'T spam.
