this may be in the wrong forum, but has anyone tried to make a longer than stock CF or Aluminum Chassis for the xmods to fit 1:24 scale models? i was thinking its probably easier to use a cnc machine to cut it out and then drill all the hole needed...anyone that has ideas should post them here.

Re: CF or Aluminum Chassis?

If i had to choose i would make a cf body out of a bi-directonal triple laminate or a bi balsa bi. I do a lot of cf work here at the University of MO Rolla. (UMR) and Cf really isnt that hard to work with if you have the tools. the best way to do it would be to do the setup and vac bag the parts.

AS for cutting CF we use a water jet! :) but a good dremel will work just make shure you have an old long sleeve shirt to wear and a face mask.

AS long as you keep the basic body layout of the xmods (screw holes, shape, ect) and you use nuts or tap the holes you should be fine.

Right now i am working on doing a Kevlar & balsa body, but i am also laying up, CF nomex and some, CF kevlar. the real strength in all of these materials is not only in the light weight but also in there material strength. by using bidirectional, uni directional and other weaves of fiber you can customize the bodies characteristics and make a sweet, light and strong car.

Oh one last note. CF is only light if you do it right. You dont need much epoxy at all just enough to dampen the sheet and then squeegy of the excess. A little bit of epoxy goes a long ways.
