I have amended rule #2 of the required rules to follow for XMODWORLD.

Things are starting to get out of hand.

This included any profane word. It does not matter if your circle of friends commonly use these words. If the word can be described as a profane or cuss word, then it is banned from use. The admins of xmodworld and declated this a PG rated site. Please respect their wish.

This includes any reference, or character substitution. Trying to hide profanity by character substition, or by an acronym does not make it alright. It still is a reference to profanity.

2. Profanity/Cussing is not allowed. This is a PG rated site. XMODWORLD has many young members. Posts will be edited or removed by moderators and the member will recieve a warning PM. Get too many warnings for profanity and you will be banned. This includes all references to profanity. Acronyms and character substution is uncluded. IE; using '$' in place of an 'S'.

Re: Posting profanity.

Well I think the end-it-all would be a list of what is, and is not considered profain for the site. PG is non descriptive, because in it I find damn and hell allright (in minor usage), but to another person, its not appropriate for PG.

Besides the the obvious, dirty 4 letter words that are bleeped on tv, a list of other words would be the end-it-all of how PG is interpreted. But things like WTF, thats a bit over kill. The age of kids that are here, even the youngest use it, and more as we've seen in some more extreme instances...

Re: Posting profanity.

Common sense and some forethought are valid requirements on all our behalves.........

I dont intend to catch any loopholes, or create a rift in site policy structure, but its my personal belief that the whole 'PG' site standard is a farce, and what is really being insinuated is that this is a kinder kids issue. Please keep in mind that the term PG refers to 'Parental Guidance suggested' Thus, there will of course be some elements that would be lightly unsavoury to some ears / eyes, but that in its own right is a matter of perspective. Dont get me wrong, I think the concept of controlling the unnecessary use of expletives is great, especially when a good # of the kids who frequent this site have their browsing monitored by parents / guardians. I wouldnt want to be one of the mods when they get letters from parental units citing complaints relevant to profanity. I do have some issues with the interpretation of slang, though. For instance, the inventor of the modern flush toilet was named Sir Thomas Crapper. Not such an insidious word if it is directly short handed from a persons real last name, right? Yet I cringe when little kids say it. Secondarily, I have a problem with the use of the term 'dingleberry.' To myself and everyone I know this refers to part of a man's genitalia. The lowest part of said area.

I'm bringing this up because some of use ARE from other countries, and because XMW is based in the U.S., thus held to our standards.

Is this not an English speaking site for the most part?

We are talking about obvious swear words, not slang terms.

With all due respect..... Sorry Mongo, but in my humble opinion 'English speaking' has very little to do with it. The english language is littered with more curse words, derogatory terms, and vague interpretations than any other language on Earth. The majority of the english language is bastardized from various other languages. Take for example the inception of 'Ebonics' which could require a whole new dictionary. The UK is credited as being the birthplace of the English language, but what they consider profane and what we in North America consider profane are very different. Where you reside, and the context of any part of the communication is what is important.

Like I said, its not my intention to push open doors that are locked, but to ask you guys to keep in mind that just because one person finds a term or phrase to be unacceptable, doesnt mean it was written to be so.

Please excuse me if this has fallen on eyes that disapprove. I just felt it had to be mentioned.

use your head first guys, and the rest will follow through - mech

Re: Posting profanity.

I just want to say that I have no problems with not being able to curse and swear on the forum, rules are rules, it's that simple. Do you have rules in your household? Don't you expect people to abide by your rules in your house?

vanillasky wrote:

I have a problem with this though. Using profanity to express oneself is not a sign of stupidity or anything else. Curse words are just that, "words". It is us as a society that has put a taboo on the use of certain words. Do a search on youtube for George Carlin, and the seven curse words you can't say on TV. It's a part of his old stand up act in which he puts it all in perspective. I think it is so true and I share the same outlook/views on this topic.

Re: Posting profanity.

Ya know, I'm not sure if it's a good idea to bar the use of 'wtf' here. To me that's just going a little too far.

It's one thing to filter out the entire word, but it's quite another when acronyms start to be filtered because they contain the first letter of a cuss word.

I mean if you used the acronym AYF, that could be filtered because of the last letter in it.

And I come from a board that actually HAS under-18 members (two are actually 15) and no one even so much as thought of filtering out acronyms. We always went by maturity level. never age.

Re: Posting profanity.

I just don't see the problem in using A_ _ and the words for "heck" and "poop" I hear these all the time on PUBLIC television
and on the radio,
and in PG movies,
and on E and T rated video games.

I agree with people not using "S _ _ _/F _ _ _" but the little ones? Seems overprotective to me, if thoes people (who may or not be religious), don't like it, then xmodsrc.com is an alternitive, albiet a really poopie one.

Correct.

I though that people here could use some common sense and figure out what words we are talking about.

Also, some people are getting off topic. Those posts have been deleted.

Re: Posting profanity.

While on the subject of rules, I suggest re-enforcing the rule one sentence posts. I actively visit a forum where one sentence posts put you on probation, and sometimes you are even banned. I'm not saying it should be that harsh, but it should be a more enforced rule.

No, that word is considered profanity.

Is there a problem with not using a substitute word, like I edited your post?

You know, you can comunicate effectivly without using any profanity. You can still get your point accross without using profanity.

If the admins of this site say that this is a PG rated site and no profanity is allowed, then as a mod, I am bound to enforce the rule. If they say that you can use that work, then I will refrain from moderating out those words.

Re: Posting profanity.

English speaking, sure. It's just that in other countries, words that we consider "profane" are perfectly normal words. Five minutes in an airport with someone from another country will tell you this.

It's not that it's "profane" in the english language, it's that as Americans, we have a stick up our respective bung holes when it comes to language.

Use common sense. This is about swear words.

You can also use jerk, butt, or dingleberry in place of profane words. Just remember the other rules about respect and flaming. :D
