first xmod

Well this is my first xmod, got it yesterday for my birthday. The only upgrades I need for it are the bearings and the stage 2 motor, both radio shacks I went to didn't have either of them there, but they had everything else. It is the infiniti g35...

I have 4wd, racing suspension upgrade, suspension and steering kit, tire kit, 6 cell mod, body kit. I got the xmod batteries + charger too. Its a pretty fast car, and I only have the stage 1 right now so I guess it will only get faster.

I had some trouble installing the 6 cell mod, mostly because I was afraid of ruining my birthday present, but I think I got it right. Only one question, the red wire on the 2 cell holder goes to the half of the black wire that is connected to the xmod battery holder, right?

I think I will be buying some GPM for it after I find the bearings and stage 2...

A body I might put on it if I feel like it.

Re: first xmod

Well I got the stuff. The wires on the stage 2 are alot longer than the stage 1 making it a hard fit for the 6 cell...I don't know how im going to fit a spider v3 in there when I get one...

Re: first xmod

I haven't tried them but I have heard that they are ok, and those are in the US, so shipping wouldn't take very long.

Re: first xmod

Have you bought the bearings yet? If not, I would check Rcmart and Ebay because the Radioshack ones aren't all that good, plus they are open bearings which are just higher maintenance. Look up xmods evo bearing on Ebay (I bought some from joaquimassis)

Re: first xmod

$30 cheaper online? Did you factor in shipping? Usually businesses will try NOT to lose money on internet sales. They make up the low prices with outrageous shipping charges.

Re: first xmod

Me and my dad are going to radioshack tomorrow to pick up the bearings and stage 2...I feel kind of bad because this is coming out to be pretty expensive, I could have gotten everything I have right now for about $30 cheaper online. Anyways, right now with the stock bushings my car has quite a bit of play either left or right and I suppose this is what is hindering performance, will this go away with the bearings? Also what differences between the stage 1 and 2 can I expect?

Thanks,

Re: first xmod

No problem, he's a good seller, very honest guy. I've bought 7 or 8 things from him. Rcmart is good to deal with as well, I've bought from there a few times too.

Good luck with the upgrades.

Re: first xmod

I wouldn't recommend buying a pre-made one as they can be costly. I bought 2 shafts for $4 shipped on Ebay, and yeah you have to sand them and file the d-cut but it's really easy to do. Check this out http://cgi.ebay.com/DIY-2pc-CARBON-FIBER-DRIVESHAFTS-xmods-xmod_W0QQitemZ120130742059QQihZ002QQcategoryZ34063QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD2VQQcmdZViewItem He sends you a tutorial with easy to follow directions and pics.

Hope that helps.

Re: first xmod

Yeah sorry, 2 pairs of the swing shafts. Where is a good place to get cf shafts cheap? I need the long one for the g35, and would rather not get a set of 3.

Re: first xmod

Sounds good so far, and I believe you are getting 2 pairs of the swing shafts?
You would probably be better off buying a premade CF center shaft, they are a pain in the a** to make.

Re: first xmod

Well I picked out some GPM from rcmart.com...

GPM Delrin Rear Ball Diff. (BU) USD$14.90
GPM Alloy Rear Universal Swing Shaft (BU) USD$13.80 (2x)
GPM Alloy Front Knuckle Arm (BU) USD$9.90
GPM Alloy Rear Knuckle Arm (BU) USD$9.90

Sub-Total:USD$48.50

Are these good parts? This is a good start I think and all I have for parts right now is $50

I will probably order 1 or 2 feet of carbon fiber rod too and make some center shafts. What diameter is best for this?

Re: first xmod

There is a clicking noise which seems to be coming from the rear diff. Its noticable when going from reverse to forward. Is this normal? Also I had to go back to 2wd because when I was cleaning the parts I lost a bushing for the front diff :S. So until I get the bearings I have 2wd, but it is really fast :p

edit: man 1 problem after another...now it seems my steering is off. it steers sharp going right, but really wide going left. I looked at the wheels, and it looks like they are kind of in a V formation, is this supposed to be like that?

Re: first xmod

I pulled a front and rear out of my car to see if they were different and they looked the same to me, so I would say yes I don't see why not.

Re: first xmod

You don't absolutely need alloy for the most part, most of them are dress up and really don't improve performance. The alloy I would recommend would be knucles, diffs, wheel shafts, and dogbones. These stock parts have a greater tendency to break, so best to upgrade to alloy.

If you are going to upgrade your motor, I would look into a Spider V3 but that really depends on what motor you are looking at. Also you might want to look at a lithium-ion or lithium-polymer battery upgrade but before doing that you should definitely research them and learn about how to take proper care as they have the potential to be dangerous.

Hope that helps.

Re: first xmod

Do I really need alloy parts if I am not going to be racing in any league or anything. Would it benefit more from a carbon fiber shaft? Or what are some good after market upgrades for stock xmods(besides motor).

Re: first xmod

Great job for a first car. Once you start getting into different things here, you'll see what stuff you would need/want to get for it. I have a link for bearings, they're not a full set, but it's what you need for all four knuckles and the rear differential. You would have to use the stock bushings for the front diff. Another good point about them is that they are sealed, so you don't have to worry abput crap getting into them.

P.S. Welcome to the forum! :D

Edit: I just looked at your pics. I noticed they are HUGE zoomed in, so if you want to, open them up in paint, go to Image-stretch/skew. Then in the top two boxes, type in 20 in both. That's the size I use to show my pictures on forums.
