i heard that if you have a lipo battery kit, you should not use a ball bearing differential because it will start slipping very quickly. is that true, because i want to buy a ball bearing differential for my evo because i keep breaking my gear differentials. thanks for the help.

Re: Ball Bearing Differential Question

Thanks. When I said that the gears were breaking, I meant that the gears inside the differential (the three little one) were breaking; the teeth on all three of them were just breaking completely off. That is why I wanted to get a ball bearing differential. After all that has been said, I think I will buy one and tighten it down as to prevent premature slipping due to having lithium batteries. Thanks guys.

Re: Ball Bearing Differential Question

Adding shims to the gear diff will help, it won't lock it completely but will press the gears together more to create a rather stiff LSD effect.

If you want a ball diff for your Evo go for the Atomic (not Atomicmods) one. It uses the same internals as their MA010 differential which is widely regarded to be an excellent value. It won't slip much if you tighten it properly.

Re: Ball Bearing Differential Question

My gears strip too but i don't really understand how locking it could help. I'll have to try it.

Re: Ball Bearing Differential Question

This is a Evo since you're stripping gears right?

I believe you can tighten the ball diff down to the point it's almost locked, but the wheels will still be able to rotate somewhat independantly.

If you're stripping gears I would say either get a stock one and lock it, or get a Ball Diff...

Re: Ball Bearing Differential Question

well thanks for the help, guys, but did anyone say whether it is a good idea to get the ball bearing diff even if i have lipo batteries. The reason im thinking of getting one is because i keep breaking the gear differentials. i just want to know if the differential will start slipping faster if i have the lipo and how much faster it will start slipping or if anyone else has a ball bearing diff with lipo and what problems theyre having (i know....a run-on sentence). thx

What a diff's job is to split power between the two tires it powers. Your most common is an open diff. It allows the outside tire to spin faster than the inside while in a corner. This is on most all RWD and FWD cars and trucks (up until modern days). Its simple and reliable. This is why on most old muscle cars and most trucks, when they do a burn out only one tire spins. In the event the tires loose traction, the tire with the least grip gets all the torque, and spins, while the other rolls along with little power to it.

LSD is Limited slip. It allows the out side wheel to go faster like an open diff, but doent allow for the tires to spin seperatly. In the even a tire looses traction, it has to also spin the other tire as well.

Spool/lockers lock both axles together, for a 50/50 split of power and torque at each wheel. The best for off roading and drag racing

this is the basic lesson...

That one way to put it 8O little more indepth than mine

Re: Ball Bearing Differential Question

For a locked diff, just use a stock diff: A metal pin holds both halves together. Take it to where you can support the diff, with the head of the pin facing up. Take something that can fit in the cup of the diff, and lightly hammer the pin in a bit. This locks it up. If you want to unlock it, just flip the diff around, and tap the pin out some.

If you just want a locked diff, just do it with a stock diff, no need to waste cash on the ball bearing diff

O.k. I get what the diff is but I don't understand how to lock it.

3- How do you lock it?

1. the diff is what transfers the power to the wheels....well purdy much

2. alot of people lock there diffs for touque and so both wheens spin in the same direction

3. paper supper glue clay some thing to stop it.....

hope that helps a bit
