I'm sure a bunch of people have complained that their xmods (with the exception of skyline owners) sit too high off the ground. so this tut is to help you folks on how to lower your xmod, while maintaining drivability. there's no need to cut your springs when lowering your car, unlike some other methods that are just for show. so here we go...
1. get your tools: superglue, a sharp knife, 60 (give or take) grit sandpaper, screwdriver.
2. let's start w/ the lowering. the first step is to take off the rear body mount. it's this piece, and it's held on by one screw only.

3. you also want to take off your front bumper, giving you access to the the front body mount (the slit in the plastic where the front clip fits).
4. remove your front shock assemblies, and then remove the front clip.

5. now we begin the manual labor... take your front clip, and where the foremost part extends, cut it off (carefully); then superglue it back on, aligning the bottom edge w/ the bottom edge of the main part.

5b. just in case you weren't robot-precise, sand the sides of the remodeled front clip, as well as the front side. my clip has been sanded down pretty far.
6. eye the approximate distance you moved the cut-off portion of the front clip; now look at this part of the your body (circled)...

...and sand it down approximately the same distance. you need not be exact; afterwards you can adjust the height using little dabs of superglue or by sanding it down a bit more.
7. test fit! reinstall the front clip and rear body mount; try to clip the chassis back onto the body. very likely, it won't fit very well, so you can shave down suspicious parts (circled).

notice i removed the wing mirror mounts, as well as the center brace underneath the hood. it probably wasn't necessary, but i didn't know what was contacting, so... hehe.
8. if your front clip isn't going in very easily, you can reduce its dimensions again and/or shave the front body mount like this. i just took sandpaper and sanded away at the top and bottom.

9. test fit again. the chassis should go in without excessive resistance now. put your front bumper back this time. notice that the chassis is now "farther up" into the body now.

looks really good, doesn't it? but we ain't done yet.
10. very likely your wheels will rub on the bodywork now that it's lower. use whatever method you need to eliminate the problem material (circled).

11. another problem you might encounter (depending on car) is that the bodywork often hits the ground before the suspension has moved much at all. simple solution: sand away the offending plastic (circled).

12. final test fit. if there are any problems still, consult the previous steps. if none, you're done. enjoy that sleeker looking xmod you made 8)

yes, i know i forgot my exhaust pipe.
for my stang i just reversed the front body clip. sanded the wheel wells so the wheels dont hit the fender. After that i took a dremel and sanded down the rear part the clip sits on. My 06 stang is so low the front bumber is 1 MM off the ground. Keep on moddin!!!
:) You cannot tell me that doesn't look great? Learn what pieces of art look like, before they're completed. ;)
1- Obviously the RSX is not finished, and the putty is not sanded down, hence it will not be all that good looking.
2- "Rice" is an Asian dish. It is not a name for a car. I accually had it last night at Pyong-Shash Chinese Resturaunt last night.
ewww that rsx is ugly thats not lowerin ur car thats ricing it up RICER
The front end looks much better, nice job. Glad it worked for you.
Hey, great tutorial, I did what you showed for my WRX and thought I'd show some before and after pics.
Before....

After...

I think there is a slight improvement. Thanks Color0 for the tips.
i did it with a black rsx had a lot of extra parts in case it didn't work
I HAVE NO IDEA Y I DOUBTED U
IT WORKED ITS SICK
Looks nice, but you realize this is about actually lowering the shell, not making it closer to the ground.
The point of the exercise is 0 fender clearance.
Another way to lower your ride is using putty. You can get more information on selecting and applying putty to your car at your local hobby shop.
actually this tutorial enhances performance ALOT because the axmods roof is thick heavy plastic an dthis tut lowers it very small ammount that STILL MATTERS great tutorial except for the fact i ruined a supra doing that today
car looks koool. I would like to try it.
On question...after you remove the matterial around the wheels did you paint it or not? thx.
how do you lower the back?
great tut but how can i raise it back up cause i have a wrx and i did what u said but the tires are hitting and i cant deem to do it. also the chassis looks out of place from the body like its crooked and i think i sanded it down way to much so can you help me out?
does dat work on any car? wat does lowerin do for your speed? looks tight though
peace 8)
is it the same for the 65 mustang, color0 i would like to lower it a lil bit to give it more of a street rod look but not all over the floor though
thx
I just got my vette yesterday and am prepared to lower. But it looks like the crystal and the top of the steering servo hit the chassis as is. Cutting the new slot to lower it means a lot of dremeling to get them to clear. Enough that I am afraid the windshield may end up with a hole in it due to so much plastic needing to be removed.
i had a extra set of springs so i tryed to cut them and it sits so low now. i am afrade to drive it out side but on lanoliem works ok
im not sure if this will work on other cars, but on the supra, you can save quite a bit of work on lowering the front by flipping the front clip upside down. you may have to drill out bigger holes for the suspension, but otherwise it is much easier than cutting parts and gluing them back together.
i sold both my corvettes before this was posted, so sorry i couldn't try it.
probably not... for the corvette i would recommend cutting a new slot for the front clip to go into. see www.mini-z-bar.com/page105.html
i know this is a bit late  but on my car(i feel like a noob saying this) the front clip is alread down as low as i goes..... :? if anyone has a suggestion(i have the vette) please tell me if i should modify the front clip at all
Thanks,
Todd
i cut it off, and glued it down LOWER... then i sanded it to make sure nothing was protruding.
I'm a little confused on the front clip part. So, you cut it off, and glue it back on. Why cut it off? Why not just... sand it....
i did a tut like this a while back except i just changed out the whole front clip with one from the sky line or another car the skyline goes down and the civic is the highest going up i think the supra is straight and the rsx goes up slitghtly so all you do is take the skyline clip on the front and put it on the civic or any other car an the front is lowered as for the back judt do it the same way he did
awesome tut. Worked great
sorry bout that, i was away...
sure, go ahead. now that there's a tut section :P
color0 With your permission (and when Kai is finished setting me up) I would like to move your tutorial to the NEW TUTORIALS INDEX. Please let me know ASAP. MOST LIKELY it will be a sticky there, but you need to wait for Kai to finish giving me my moderator abilities.
This mod lowers your body not the chassis so it won't decrease or increase body roll but you are right, if you lower your car, it will decrease body roll making it a better handling car.
note: (for ppl with stock suspension)...... once u lower your car you will notice that theres less body roll
thanks anyways
i found that to fix the positive camber in the rear you can put little dabs of superglue on the rear body mount where the suspension arms hit it. it stops the arms from swinging up too high, thus keeping the rear wheels flat on the ground.
if i were a mod i would but obviously im not
so no sticky? :D
word of warning for supra owners: you will have to manipulate the body a bit more to fit the chassis. after all i did, the body seems to be posing some restriction to the chassis. so i'll check it out and report back later.
good tut i might try it
good :D
now i can see the pics
nevermind :) i moved all the pictures to my xmodworld gallery, now they always work and load faster too.
hey rob, how come it takes so long to move a 20kb file onto your ftp? just now i was copying a pic and it suddenly gives me error message "operation timed out". what the... :?
btw, my supra has had the 3.3k resistor mod as well as the lowering, and i haven't had any problems with rubbing. so for anyone who doesn't have tite-turnz (or a similar upgrade) rubbing shouldn't be too much of an issue.
nice tut, but i dont think my rsx is to high, i think its too low!lol, with my body kit, my front practialy tuches the ground!
thanks alot. i'll move the pictures to rob's ftp as some ppl can't see the pics.
darn it, it takes quite a while to copy the files onto that ftp...
sometimes it works for me to right clikc and click "show picture"
btw, great TUT!!!
very good job, but i cant see your pics... it shows that little red X :?
Yea, you are only lowering the body not the chassis so other than the looks, there really isn't a performance difference. But very nice tutorial, well planned out and put together. Nice job.
thats a good tutorial!! :D
The "frame" is not any lower that stock doing this, only the body drops lower to the frame.
-Rob
I hope you're running a scuff plate. Nice work :)
yep, looks like it turned out well for you.
-Rob
thanks a bunch, teammnm. :D
the pics may take a while to load, sorry folks.
is this tut worthy of a sticky?
very nice, but might i add that it had been done before, but very nice VERY NICE~ :D
thanks
