This tut will be most handy for people with tite-turnz or the 3.3k resistor mod; i know it helped me because the tite-turnz makes the steering pot go almost all the way to the left or right. so my servo was centered, but the car turned right much tighter than it did to the left. so i centered the pot as well and now this thing works like a charm.

so here we go:

1. tools/materials needed: small screwdriver, xmod servo.

2. unscrew servo top cover. there are two screws in front (obvious) and two in back:

3. remove cover, but keep the horn on the top servo cover.

4. on the left side of the above picture, the gear without an axle can just drop out. i recommend you do this.

5. in the main servo case, all we have left now is one axle and 2 or 3 gears attached to this axle. the axle is attached to the steering potentiometer, so we'll use this to center the potentiometer.

6. turn this axle all the way to the right. grab a sharpie or some other marking pen and mark Top Dead Center, basically meaning the gear tooth closest to the top of the servo case.

7. now take the axle and turn it all the way to the left. our previous mark has gone to the left, under, and now is back on the right side. mark Top Dead Center again.

8. now that we have the two extremes of the steering pot, turn the axle back to a more or less 'middle' position. you'll see that the two marks you made now point downwards and to the side. equal these out and then mark Top Dead Center to find the actual center of the steering pot's motion range.

9. replace the gear that we took out of the servo case, then replace the top servo cover, being careful to keep the horn centered, and making sure the gear that we put back gets an axle put through it. my horn is slighty off-center, but i find that this is what keeps my 350Z going straight.

10. test out. the tite-turnz can now be used to its full potential because the steering pot's range of motion isn't hindering the servo's ability to turn farther.

hope this tut helped someone, and if there are any things i need to clear up, or if you have any comments about this mod, please post here

Re: Tutorial: Centering xmod servo AND potentiometer

Thanks Color0!
From the first time it came out of the box the steering on my RSX was always drawing hard to the left. It was bad enough that even with the steering trim tweaked to the right, it still had a vague left-wander.

Magnifico. This tweak is great. She now drives straight as a laser, no trim necessary. Marked & centered the gears within a few minutes. Piece of cake... - mech

Re: Tutorial: Centering xmod servo AND potentiometer

That's pretty ingenius, especially since you knew what you were doing. You'd have to emphasize the crucial part though: insulate the antenna.

Re: Tutorial: Centering xmod servo AND potentiometer

I've finished this mod, but i have a suggestion for thoses that are gonna try it.

Start by taking your xmod appart, then tape the antenna wire so you don't overshort something.

Open the servo box, and put your batteries in its slots.

Then put your xmod on. Your servo will try to center itself by continuously spinning.

Ajust the gear so it stop spinning. After that, align the cover of your servo.

When it's ok, remove your batteries, remount everything and try it!

It will work on the first try if you've done it well!

After trying 3 times with this tutorial, that's what i've done and now it's perfectly centered!

P.S. please excuse my bad english, i'm french and i'm having a hard time writing in english.

Thanks for this tutorial!!! My car is turning left like crazy but almost doesn't turn right, so i'm gonna try it!

Re: Tutorial: Centering xmod servo AND potentiometer

are you sure about that? cuz the first one i got i have to hit the button right like twice and its not that much of a problem but on my second i have to hit left like 5 and it makes turning uneven. Example: turns one way hard and the other not much at all

Re: Tutorial: Centering xmod servo AND potentiometer

it's supposed to, and did for me and plenty of other people... try again? it's important not to let the pot turn as you put the gears back in the servo.

Re: Tutorial: Centering xmod servo AND potentiometer

Does this mod help with uneven turning because after done on my xmod it turns very bad to the right and sharp to the left and on another xmod the exact opposite. Whats wrong?

Its only on a rod, so yes it does, just pop it back on.

Re: Tutorial: Centering xmod servo AND potentiometer

The motor in the servo looks like a bit-charg motor I wonder if a stonger bit motor could be use?

Re: Tutorial: Centering xmod servo AND potentiometer

not in my experience... you may want to sand the protruding nibs of the tierod just in case. and if, when you turn while moving, you hear a clicking noise, it's the front AWD gear. take diagonal cutters and snip off a bit of each gear on that awd bevel.

and droopdog, the point of this tut is that it helps the car to turn evenly when tite-turnz is installed.

Re: Tutorial: Centering xmod servo AND potentiometer

finally a really usefull tutorial (no offense to the other onces :P )

but i was wodnering if the tuto only help from driving straight, but also from long turn to the right and short turn to the left?

i going to install the tight turn kit soon (already have some resistors) so i think ill really need this tuto.
edit: when you do the tight turn(2resistors on the plate) do i need to sanddown something of my tie rot?

Re: Tutorial: Centering xmod servo AND potentiometer

maybe you got lucky... i know for sure that after i installed the 3.3k resistors, the horn looked centered but the car turned more to the left than to the right.

Re: Tutorial: Centering xmod servo AND potentiometer

ive just always taken of the horn, and had the car on to self center, i never recentered after tight turns, the car was straight. (course i did reinstall the horn afterwords), i used the same tut thats on Atomicmods.

re:

the point of this tut is to show you where the center is. wether you have tight turns or not, it will help you center your servo.

Re: Tutorial: Centering xmod servo AND potentiometer

So what will this do for us that dont have tite turns?

Re: Tutorial: Centering xmod servo AND potentiometer

yea, it's just an estimate. as long as you understand its meaning. you want to make sure that the third mark you make is neatly centered (count gear teeth if you have to) between the first two marks you made.

the point of this tut is that you mark the left extreme, right extreme, then the absolute middle of the steering pot's range, then reassemble so that your steering starts from the middle of the pot's range. therefore, the pot doesn't keep the horn from turning all the way (after tite-turnz).

hope that helped

re:

NICE!!!!!

just what ive been looking for !!

clear up this part for me,

"turn the axle back to a more or less 'middle' position."

This is just an approx. estimate right?
