This tutorial will show you how to make your own AWD conversion without paying for a real awd kit.

Parts needed/required:
2 xmods chassis
1 xmods screw driver
1 xmods lugnut tool
1 Dremel

Bevel Gear Idea Credit Too (aznsportcar)

Step 1:
Take your extra chassis, and remove the rear end assembly and do as follows:

Step 2:
You will end up with this:

Step 3: (Credit (aznsportcar):
Here you will be making the front end's bevel gear using your dremel. (Use the bevel gear from the chassis that you took the rear assembly parts from.)

Step 4:
This is what your bevel gear should look like after cutting it with the dremel.

Step 5:
Now take apart the front end assembly and remove that weird shaped plastic piece running horizontally across the chassis between the wheels. Replace this with your stock rear end pieces, the custom bevel gear you made, and the white differential and this is what you will have.

Try it out, have fun, you may need to do a little adjustments with the bevel gear to make it fit, but once you get it to fit, it should work just fine.

I have yet to install this mod onto a chassis, i've only used the awd kit, but from the looks of it this modification is just as, or easier than the awd kit from RS.

I will be installing this on my friends civic chassis when he gets back from vacation using the same parts i showed in the pictures.

Have fun and keep on moddin'.

Re: Cheap AWD Conversion

Since we have realized that this mod/tutorial really isn't going to work, I think we can safely lock it.

Gen 1 AWD kits can still be found and they really aren't that expensive.

Hop-ups are still readily availbable.

cheez, sorry about the 'front end' thing...just me rambling on!

Re: Cheap AWD Conversion

why don't we use as much of the stock rear end as possible, then buy what we must from GPM? again, not cheap, but still better than not being able to find it at all.

Re: Cheap AWD Conversion

This doesn't work. My AWD broke so i tried this...the dog bones are too short they don't make contact with the drive cups.

Even if you use the rear differential, it binds with the dog bones and allows NO turning.

Front end understeer? Last I checked, understeer can only come from the front wheels... so it's just understeer, drop the "front end".

You've been driving that FF too long there Cowboy...

Re: Cheap AWD Conversion

while it woud be spendy, you certainly could purchase the front axle parts in alloy. i can't find an AWD for the life of me locally.

Re: Cheap AWD Conversion

ahhh thank you, see i've never tried this, this was just going from finding spare parts etc*

thank you.

this would have just been another one of my trial and error modifications. as i stated i haven't done this mod yet, and i was going to install it in my friends civic for him when he gets back from vacation.

Re: Cheap AWD Conversion

1. The rear diff axle is longer than the AWD front.
2. The AWD wheel shaft cvd's have pivots in them to allow for suspension travel. The rear straight shafts will not be effective since they will not allow for suspension travel.
3. Locking your front diff is a sure fire way of making your turning radius about 9 miles wide or have front end understeer.

I'm sure there are other things that could be improved on...but these three hit the top of my list.

Re: Cheap AWD Conversion

Or instead of buying 2 xmods and spending alot of time doing this you can buy one and an AWD kit...
