Preparing for XMAS season with track and XMODs for my son. Developed a couple of resources that may be of value.
A spreadhseet with track layouts. The Excel workbook has multiple tabs at the bottome where you can switch between layouts:

Photos I collected from across the web in order to help me design:

My initial layout, rectangular 12'x8' with center island:

Some added tips:
1. When putting together PVC pipe, if your cars hit the barriers a lot, pipe insulation is a must.
2. The typical PVC couplings will come apart if cars hit the barriers a lot. You can solve this a variety of ways. My favorite, I bought white duct tape from Lowe's and I tape over the connection. This way you can just remove the tape and the track is still portable. I wanted to avoid gluing them together at all costs. Another solution: buying threaded couplings - one side you glue to the pipe, the other end is threaded and therefore you can break apart your track.
3. As cars ram the outer barrier, it will move. Yes it's true, the weight of the 12'x8' PVC rectangle covered with pipe insulation is not heavy enough to stay put. I think it is best at a minimum if you can put the track in a corner to be supported by two walls. Could not do that in my case, so I used cable ties to attach the track to three basement poles - see photo above for my layout. I also used the cable ties to attach the barrier to the mat itself. I did this in each corner and at the midpoint of each siderail.
4. The interior island barriers will move around. For my oval (rectangular track) I filled the island barrier with sand and it was fairly heavy and stilll moved easily with cars hitting it. I ended up putting bricks in the middle of it to hold it still. For more complicated designs - see my spreadsheet, I will be using overpasses as means to hold the center island to the outer siderails for stability.
My costs for the system I have were:
$94 - 24 2'x2' foam mats from Ebay. (didn't know I could have gotten similar mats from Walmart for $74 - oh well - my mistake, your benefit. They call them puzzle mats and are located by the treadmills as a floor mat)
$25 PVC Pipe, couplings and insulation for the rectangle
$5 duct tape.
Total cost: $124.
I ended up spending another $15 on added pipe, couplings and insulation to build two different center island configurations that are more comples. So theoretically - buying mats from Walmart - $119, plus lots of time gets you a 12'x8' setup with multiple designs.
This of course brings up the question of tracks like RCP track. Personally, I feel worth the investment if you have the $ and the space. Albeit I had lots of fun building the track.
Steve
Thread crosses 10,000 views - Yeeha!
Thanks man
Wal-Mart near the treadmills is where I got mine. They sell them as exercise mats.
Where can you buy those foam mats from, I couldn`t find them at Home Depot
The mats are waterproof. They advertise them that way. I find with rain residues you may want to wash them once in a while. Will also have to sweep everyday if you have them outdoors. They do assemble in minutes in case you want to store them inmside and just build when you use them.
well just to let some of u guys know if u ever heard of big lots they have a sale for 6 for $12 and i was thinking about making me a track on my porch and i was wondering if these mats would be water proof because that is about the only space i have to build a good track
Heck I'm definately getting water noodleys. Man, and they will probably be on sale REAL soon!!!
P.S. Sry about the question erlier, I just forgot what a water noodle was.
aka "fun noodles"
Say, what are "water noodles? Oh, and I'm torying not to make a big post by putting in a gihugic pic.
I read his whole website he does use PVC tubing. Click the link in his sig and he a whole page on making his track. Lots of great info on your website Steve, even though I decided not to go the PVC route. Now I am thinking maybe I should have so I could more easily adjust the lane width.
do you have pvc tubing in the insulation?
Yeah, the PVC pipe insulation can be had at Lowe's or Home Depot. That's what I use. You can see the pics of my track at the web site in my signature.
BTW - make sure you ask someone if the size you have will fit 1/2" PVC pipe - or whatever size you used. They come in different sizes. Should slip on easily and not require you to force it on. You can just test fit it to a pipe piece that is at the store.
from a local diy shop
were did you get it?
i used this for a small zip zap track pipe insulation
doesnt scratch a xmod also i cut it in half so double the amound i got 3 1 and half metre lengths for £1.20 so its cheap
yah i willpost pics when im done but i was just wondering if there was anything else to use for a wall other than pvc cause it leaves marks on the body
I am sure my mats are the same. We really want to see your track once you have built it!
yah i know im going back and im going to get 2 more packs ill post a pic of what they look like if you want to get them after i get my digital camera working again
SWANGA- all I have to say is WOW!
I bought the only mats at my walmart and they ran out until a new shipment.
i got 12 2x2 mats for 9.99$ CANADIAN at wal-mart
sean - great deal! WIsh I had one near me. $11.20 isn't too shabby though - the Wal-Mart price.
Pep Boys has them for $9.99 and its a 6 pack of 2x2. Pretty good deal if you ask me. I just picked up 144 square feet for a little over 60 bucks. Comes out to around $0.40 a square foot.
I'd like to point out that Target is selling ProSpirit Puzzle Mats for $12 for 4 2x2 Mats!
yea - it looks like it's 14" wide or so. Bu better than nothing and in your backyard!
I have a Asphalt base and Cement on top. Its really hard to race on b/c its narrow compaired to other tracks. And theres no guardrails yet. But I can use my hard slicks on it and they will stick, so I dont have to keep using (and killing) my softies. :D
I like it! Outdoors for EVO cars. So what is the race surface made of?
I have a track, it is an outdoor one. this is the best pic of it that I have right now.
here is the link to the post if you wanted to see it

How big is your outside track when you set it up and is there anyway you can draw and post the design?
its in peace's right now cuz of the snow and my house is not big enough anythere to set it up but its just pvc and there is a church parking lot behind my house the the owner would let us set it up there but for now its in peace's and put up for the winter i have been reading your thread here and think i am going to goto wal-mart tomorrow and see if i can get some mats and start building a smaller one in my house somewhere i have been really bored lately with my cars so a couple days ago i painted my Evo mustang there is pictures under body customizations of it if you want to see it but anyways after i hit up wal-mart tomorrow i will try to start building a track indoors and get some pictures of it thanks for the info
BTW Kloned - I assume you have a track? If so, can you post pics?
LoL sorry about that never even thought to look in your info would just rather ask you that way you no i am looking
So both of our locations are in our profiles and appear in the posts on the left. O well. Any ways - I will PM you the Ann arbor info.
im about 1 and a half hours from ann arbor
im over in Hastings Michigan perty close to grand rapids but am willing to drive
Midland, MI
BTW - folks in Ann Arbor on another board have let me know they are set up for racing, so if you are near there I can get you info.
where abouts in michigan you located been looking for someone to race
Mike - wow - very clever with the back up the bordered tracks together. Should have thought of that before getting the second set of 96 SF.
LOL
Well - now I have the extra stuff to cut up. Don't feel like returning that cheap of stuff just on principle.
You have given me a couple of ideas. I can add an extension area of single height barrier that the XMODs cannot cross but the Mini-Z Monsters can. They jump it easily. Then I just put the seam under the separator of the regions.
steve,
Awesome idea.... I have a good idea in store for the new barrier walls. Ill post it when its completed. If you just want the tracks to mesh up make them only interact at two points and cut your other track off there to make it flat, then use the flat edge of the wall mart mat to mesh up perfectly. A piece of duct tape will ensure the seam is perfect....
I have also been experimenting with the track surfaces. You can convert the # side into RCP style by just roughing it up. I think they use a large steel brush wheel and feed the track under it.
Ill get more out... As for the track timer its Dead.... I spent too much time on it for what its worth.
Will post pics. It's going to be a rectangle. The double barrier will be interesting to see. Of course, my interior barrier systems can be more complex. Basically my son only does free style - no barriers, or a circular race. He has been finding my U-Turn track with 22" lanes a too hard to beat me so he his demotivated. With a larger rectangle, we can do a more intricate big guy race track as well as something more complex he can handle while still having at least 30" lanes.
Man, i wish i had more room for my track, ... Get some pics of those new track designs!
So I get home and the tracks don't mesh with my getrung.com mats. So at these prices I got another 96 SF for a total of 192 SF of the Wal-mart tracks. For the getrung.com tracks, they will become raw material for my track mods - banks, turns, jumps, bridges, etc. They are surfaced the same as the Getrung.com mats.
We are planning to expand the 12'x8' area to a 14'x13' area. An increase from 96 SF to 182 SF. Will have to cut one section of mats to create the just over 1' edge on one side of the track. Thats that's the max we can do in a rectangle and leave enough room for drivers on one end of the room and a spot to hold miscellaneous jumps, etc., not in use on the other. Also, this will allow the track to border three basement poles on one side and the basement wall on the other for more stabiity for the barriers. I also got some special PVC fittings three way L's so I can build up to a double wall of PVC pipe. The 1:28 scale Mini-Z monster trucks we have jump the 1/2" PVC pipe even with the pipe insulation. Also our EVO F150 when doing a fast turn rolls over the single height barrier onto the cement - not good. So it's off to a double height barrier.
Awesome tip steve. Its true out here in cali as well. The tracks almost mesh up perfectly. I'll give a review of the two types of mats later, but at that price its impossible to consider another source. I just picked up 61 dollars worth for my place. Ill be getting another couple of packs soon. Does anyone know why they are going on sale????
Review 1.... The back side of these is not slick like fogdogs are. With drift tires on you cant even go anywhere with the fogdog ones. These seem lesser quality, but for our purposes who cares. We will be driving on them. Not building a house of them.
Thanks again steve..
Big sale today on Puzzle Mats at Walmart. $11.40 for 24 square feet (6 2'x2' mats). I picked up 96 square feet for $48.34 (including tax). $0.50/square foot.
Everyone, hold off on the zip Zap lap counter, there seems to be a problem, in ambient light interference. Im working on a fix right now. Ill have it done soon... :? hopefully.
dang, that's toit... ...i have to get a timer this weekend.
Snowfire:
I wasnt really thinking of turn 4, i was thinking of turn two. It seems that the track extends down about 3 regular tiles too far and maybe 2 1/2 tiles also. I also think that turn 5 and 6 might be a little sharp. I had corners like that and i got rid of them by softening the inside with a diagonal piece. It just makes it kinda hard to make the corner. Thats my two cents and otherwise i like your track a lot. The suggestion at turn 2 is not one of racing ability, its one of frugality of tiles, the course will work great at turn 2 the way it is, its just those 5 tiles can make more track somewhere else...
Steve i completed the zip zap timers last night. They work awesome. I just need to mount them onto the track. I have two done right now at about 1.5 foot lanes in between them. WHat i had to do was solder in a 3 volt power supply, to both the reciever and the transmitter units. I also combined the two transmitter units into one bi directional transmitter. THen i reversed the direction of one of the reciever units to recieve from the other way so that the recievers are on the edge of the track, and the bidirectional transmitter is in the center making a lane. So if you have a hard time picturing this i dont blame you, but i cant use my digital camera because i the lens is broken from underwater use. So i have some digital pictures from my phone ill post as soon as it charges.
R1 IS THE RECIEVER UNIT
R2 IS THE REVERSE FACING RECIEVER UNIT
--- IS THE IR BEAM
00 IS TRACK
T IS TRANSMITTER(moded to make it bidirectional)

I was using it in my living room and if you are by yourself you can just race on best lap and try to beat the course record, if someone else is there it signals each lap with a beep, and tells you when you have completed the race by a series of three or four beeps. It also logs the time and speed of all of the laps. All for 5 bucks....
Ok Here it is

Sorry again for how blurry they are. But you can see how they all line up and maybey you can see the wiring. Ill get more pics when i mount them on the actual track.. But for now they work great...Of course the wiring will go under the track, just in case you were going to ask.
what wasted space? if you mean that little hook on the 4th turn, thats to make sure poeple dont ride the rails, and actually try to control their cars. kinda like a speed trap. you do something amature, youll end up paying for it, cuz you have to back out and youll lose quite a bit of time
I would trim up some of the wasted space around some of the corners... But other than that it looks good....Maybe so we dont hijack steves post too much and distract others you should start a Track layout topic. There we can rate and discuss the layouts of the course. Heck ill start one right now.
ok, i re-did the last track, makeing it longer, in the same amount of space, and by the looks of it, more fun. it has more places that require skill, and even looks to me like it would be a fun drift course, because not all the turns are right angles. the bridge is skinnier, so will be harder to navigate, but hopefully this will keep cheaters speed low, so they dont try to fly off the side and take a shortcut
BTW, if anyone wants to use my track plans, go right ahead, just say thanks, and give some credit.
heres the gridded one:

and the more appealing no grid version :D :

oh yea, this track takes about 240 1 foot tiles.
yea, that course is mostly ment for high speed (almost a 20 ft straightaway  ) with some wide turns for drifting. plus i can make more than that one set of jumps, for back to back jumping on the long straightaway. im gonna edit it slightly for a more difficult drive, with some more turns, but keeping it that general size (i dont have as much room or $$$ as id like, i doubt ill be able to make a track for a long time. i gotta buy myself a car in a year)
