RCP is the store bought track that radio shack sells. Very expensive, like $200 for like 80 square feet of track. So you could buy that or for $200 I could buy 480 sq ft of foam mats.
I like the idea. Thats really good stuff. Its soft and bendable. I also like the devilish look ot the top. It would make some serously cool off road track edges if they were frosted white or red..... Just the peaks of the mountains. Another consideration that your rails bring up is that i would like to see colors in the rails.. I originally made my tracks with green because i want to be able to eye the course, and know in my peripheral vision where the next corner is. So bright color is a must....
Ok so I was playing around with some stuff I found in my garage. I cut up some of this foam into strips. The foam I would be using here is really soft and spongy as you can see by the last pic. The other stuff I have there is cable concealer, it folds up and sticks to the wall to hide your cables ( had some left over from when I installed my LCD on the wall, Now I have a wall mounted, 37 inch computer monitor) Back on topic here are some pics of the materials:
I included the last pic so you can see how spongy this stuff is. I have no idea where I could buy more of it but right now I have about 30 feet worth. The cable hider stuff I got from Lowes and it was like 5 bucks for 10 feet. Kind of nice it already has self adhesive along the bottom so I could easily stick it to the foam. Well I am not sure how well it would stay put, especially when bending for corners. That is another thing you might want to add to your list of qualifications mike, flexibility because I would like to have nice smooth corners.
haha and here it is! Maybe we can get a dedicated tracks section?
Anyways in response to Mike I agree with everything you wrote! Unfortunately I do not have ideas yet as to how this super rail will be constructed. I I was thinking maybe walls that had foam in the middle and then a smooth bumber that is flexible and if you hit it your car would bounce off and the rail-|-foam-|-wall would act like a shock absorber in that the wall would be the part attached to the track and the rail could move freely upon impact. I don't know if you guys understand what I am saying here but yeah, thats my idea. I have no idea how to make it though, hahaha!
P.S. Mike you can get the noodles at K-mart for $2 a piece. Just FYI if you decide to buy some more ;)
holy crap that is expensive i think ill go get some rubber tubing i have acces to lots off that
