I have a 24' x 24' deck and i want to setup a track on it. I am looking for suggestions on track material. I was thinking roofing paper but that stuff gets very hot in the sun. Not sure if thats the best way to go. Any thoughts on a material that can stay outside and hold up to weather?
My track plan is to recreate the famous corkscrew section at laguna seca so there will be some building involved. The rest of the track will be left up to my imagination. :) I'll post pics when its complete.
Thanks,
Localbuzz
also i saw in another xmod track that the guy cut water noodles into 4ths, made nobs coming out of the bottom, and used those for the walls of his track...used the mats aswell. the nobs obviosly went into the mats lol.
ok thanks guys, I`ll look at lowes because I`ve look in that area in wally world
They can also be found at Lowes, back by where the indoor/outdoor carpet is, and at sams Club, I think where the office furniture asile is. I have also heard that Home Depot carries it. The mats I have are multi-colored on one side and a black grid pattern on the other. They are cheap.
Are you sure you are in the right section? At Wal-mart they are by the treadmills for exercise equipment flooring.
God dangit I`ve yet to find those mats and I`ve been to almost every Wal-Mart in the area, I`ll try the dollar store next
Dude, where can I get those walmart mats?  Na, joking. How much do you get and how much do they cost.
The local Dollar Tree (dollar store type thing) has EVA mats. one pack of 3-1 sq.ft. pieces costs a dollar. I bought a box of 48 packs from them.
My mom wasn't happy bout that one
Sounds like it would be a cool track.
I run on the colored smooth side - very grippy. I know others who like the other sode, but most of the pics in this section are on the smooth side. By the way, I don;t have a problem creating many designs on the foam mats. Yes, liited to 45 and 90 degree turns if you want something that is easy to put together and take apart quickly. But if you want something pernmanent, then a garden hose cut up will may nice curves and is easily fixed to the mats with cable ties.
this might sound like a stupid question, but I have to ask it.
What side do you run the cars on. The colored smooth side or the black grid side?
Amen brotha, they work amazingly.
google it
does anyone have a pic of that corkscrew?
the thick foam won't seam too well if you're trying to imitate the infamous laguna seca corkscrew. even with glue, the hot sun will bake it right off.
i know you can get a much material at home improvement stores that's pretty smooth when it's new. i'm not sure about it when it gets older, but when it's new, it's pretty solid and smooth stuff. it's in the garden section. ask for "much matting." i've seen the stuff in rolls and in precut shapes for around trees. i think it's something to look into.
Well, the interlocking square foam pads from Wal-mart work well, and they have edge pieces for barriers, and also the racers can line up at a piece of masking tape on the smooth, non-diamondplate side, and the tape can be removed without residue or lost foam. I have done this myself, too. The best kind? Probably the 2X2 ft. kind, because there is just enough room on one pad to give beginners and total XMODS newbs a chance when racing.
How's the track coming?
and did you consider using concrete?
Since your trying to recreate the corkscrew turn (I'd really like to see that once it's done), it'd probably be easier if you first built the base of the track out of some smooth plywood. After that is done, get some Ozite Carpert, or some other smooth low cut carpet, and lay it onto the wood base. I'm guessing you won't be changing the layout, so nail the carpet into the wood as well.
As for the barriers, use whatever idea you already have, or go the PVC/Insulation path (probably the cheapest and easiest way), or you can find a way to adapt Science Mike's (Check his track thread for his barrier set up) to your track.
you could use smooth plywood but it wont drain when it rains. if you have a shop-vac that would work.
