I actually started this hobby after moving into a new house last month, and oddly enough, the house is uniquely suited for RC racing.

The house I moved into had a in ground swimming pool in the back yard at one time, but due to cracking back in the 80s, they filled in the pool with dirt and left it. I have been slowly cleaning up the backyard and found that the entire pad around the pool is intact, with only a couple of small cracks that can be repaired with quik-crete or mortar. It looks like the whole length is semi-finished concrete, so I doubt there will be any drifting happening on this track, and as long as it is kept swept it will make a nice place to test top speeds on mild engine mods. The straightaways are about 20' for the long sides and 12' for the short ends, with a width of the short ends being nearly 4' and the long straights being about 3'. I have some conveyor belting that is 4' wide, so we are going to make banked turns at both ends which will be partially suspended on a wooden framework, and to border the inside and outside edges of the track I am planning on using solid plastic yard trim, to keep cars from going off the track on accident. There is a small flat area that is adjacent to one of the long straights that appears to be concrete as well, so I am thinking of putting in a pit area, making it kind of a NASCAR track that can be used by cars with speed mods on them.
Since the inside of the track was filled in with dirt, and I need to clean it up a bit as well, I am thinking about making a dirt track for racing off-roaders as well, putting moguls, banked turns and maybe a couple of switch-backs in there with some jumps, but that will wait until I get the regular track finished.
The basement of the new house also has a painted concrete floor (black and white checkerboard) that I am planning on making an indoor trakc on as well. The square footage of the basement room is nearly 700', so pretty wide and long, which makes me think that I can make a sectional track using PVC boarders to optimize the space since this is also my in home workshop and computer room/office. The only problem I have with this floor is that I have stage 2 motors in many of my cars, so they have a tendency to power slide/drift around corners down there or when you accelerate they "spin out" in the direction of the power tires. I have found that AWD will help prevent the spin outs while accelerating, but the corners I think will just make a nice challenge for drivers to overcome.
I will post pictures as I get things moving along, but wanted to get started on posting this so people could give me ideas on this.
Let's just say; I'd have a field day in your backyard. (Part time landscaper up north during the summer.)
Man, I want you backyard! 8)
1/28 boats and cars, racing sounds fun to me!! :D
Hadn't thought of that, but the little hut actually has power to it, so I could pretty easily, LOL!
One of the really cool things is that the lump of rocks in the corner on the left is actually a mountain scene fountain, with pools and waterfalls. I plan on restoring that and I may figure out a way to make it part of te track as well. The area along the left hand fence that goes from the shed to the fountain is all compacted dirt with no real purpose; it is too shaded to get anything nice to grow and the tree dumps needles on it like they came out of a dumptruck, so I am thinking of a way to incorporate that area and the center dirt track as well.
Another idea that was brought up was to do some "land sculpting" in the middle of the pool, with plastic sheeting under it all, and make a race track for boats as well. I found some micro RC jet boats that would work, and it would be big enough to work with boats that are in scale with the XMods too, so it could be kind of fun! I have several Godchildren that will no doubt be coming over and playing back there, so the idea appeals to me as a way of keeping them in control when the adults want to do something else, not to mention that the parents and kids could do it together and have some fun with it.
You could make a concession stand out of the little hut on the left, and make a huge offroad track for some RCs. Maybe a mini one for Xmods, a larger one for 1:10th, and so on...
Cool backyard. You could really do something with it. ;)

By the way. I had to read more in this post, than I did on my English final today.
